Railroad crew members may be banned from texting and making cell phone calls while on the job, under regulations proposed Monday by the Federal Railroad Administration. Engineers, conductors, switchmen and other key crew members would be affected by the new regulation.

Michigan has become the 24th state to ban texting while driving. Gov. Jennifer Granhold signed the anti-texting bill on Oprah Winfrey’s “No Phone Zone Day” program.

Federal agencies, corporations and Oprah Winfrey are teaming up to make Friday the first official phone-free-while-driving day. They are calling it “No Phone Zone Day” and will include events promoting distraction-free driving and a national pledge to stop using phones while behind the wheel.
