Name: University of Urbana-Champaign.  Academic Development

Historical Note:

The Board of Trustees created the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs on May 21, 1975 by merging the offices of the Vice President for Academic Development and Coordination and the Vice President for Governmental Relations and Coordination. The responsibilities of the office included the development of academic relationships, coordination of the operation of academic components and administration of University-wide educational programs.

Though the Trustees made the simple title "Provost" official in 1922, the Executive Vice President functioned as President in his absence and assisted the President. He was the chief academic officer under the President and was a member of the faculty of each college, school, institute, and division. In 1972, the Office of the Provost was realigned into planning and allocation functions designated as the Office for University Planning and Resources Allocation under the Vice President for Planning and Allocations and the Office of Academic Development and Coordination under the Vice President for Academic Development and Coordination. The latter was established April 19, 1972. It was to serve as an interim office while the Office for University Planning and Resource Allocation got started. One of its responsibilities was the Management Information System which would provide data to the University, the campuses, and external agencies for planning and evaluation.

he Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), under the jurisdiction of the Office for Academic Development and Coordination, was formed in 1957-58 as a voluntary organization of Big Ten schools and the University of Chicago interested in improving higher education in Midwest.CIC began the Biometeorology Graduate Program in 1963 as an interinstitutional and interdisciplinary approach to the graduate training of specialists concerned with the effects of weather on living organisms. On October 15, 1963, Assistant Provost Martin Zeigler called a meeting to consider and coordinate the management of institutional data resources of the Urbana and Chicago campuses. The group called itself the Committee on Institutional Data.
