Tainted ground turkey is being blamed by federal authorities for a salmonella food poisoning outbreak that has killed one person and sickened at least 76 others in 26 states since March.
But federal officials have not issued a recall or indicated the suspected source of the contamination, triggering criticism that the government is moving too slowly to protect the public.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the victims have been infected by Salmonella Heidelberg, a strain that is difficult to treat because it is resistant to many common antibiotics.
The CDC says the Heidelberg strain was found in cultures of ground turkey samples purchased from four stores between March 7 and June 27. Three of these samples appear to be from the same production site, and the fourth is under investigation.
Last week the Department of Agriculture issued a public health alert advising consumers how to handle and cook ground turkey, but the agency has not used its authority to issue a recall. In addition, The Associated Press reports that the USDA has not responded to requests for comment on why there has not been a recall.
University of Pennsylvania bioethicist Arthur Caplan said the government’s handling of the outbreak raises questions about why the public isn’t being given more details.
“You’ve got to protect the public health,” Caplan said. ”That’s their first and primary value — not industry, not any other goal. They have to warn as quickly as they think there’s reasonable evidence for concern.”
Bill Marler, an attorney who has represented victims of large food-poisoning outbreaks, agreed that the three positive samples should prompt a recall.”Consumers have no idea what to do except not eat ground turkey,” he said.
Salmonella are rod-shaped bacteria found in human and animal feces. The most common symptoms of infection are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever.
