It long has been known that drinking and driving don’t mix. But new research shows that taking drugs before taking the wheel also often is deadly.
As USA Today reports, researchers who analyzed government data on more than 44,000 drivers who died in single-vehicle crashes between 1999 and 2009 found that 24.9 percent tested positive for drugs.
Among those victims, 22.7 percent tested positive for marijunana and related substances, 22.5 percent for stimulants, 14.9 percent for multi-drug combinations and 9.3 for narcotics.
By comparison, 37 percent of the victims had blood alcohol levels over the .08 legal limit. Another 5 percent showed lower levels of alcohol, and 58 percent had no alcohol in their systems.
The study is among the first to show the prevalence of drug use among fatally injured drivers, according to co-authors Eduardo Romano and Robert Voas of the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation in Calverton, Md.
Combining drugs and alcohol produced no greater impairment, the researchers found. “When a driver is drunk, it doesn’t matter what drugs are in their system. The alcohol takes over,” Romano said.
While plenty is known about the effects of drunk driving, few similar studies have been done on the impact of drugs, said Robert DuPont, former head of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. One of the few pieces of research was a 2007 survey that found that 16 percent of nighttime weekend drivers tested positive for illegal drugs.
“There’s still an inadequate appreciation of drugged driving separate from the alcohol problem,” DuPont said.
Only 19 states have laws dictating zero tolerance for drugs while operating a vehicle, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association.

This is a daunting statistic! I write a lot about the dangers of distracted driving and other bad habits of drivers. But this goes tho show you that while it’s still important to avoid distracted driving, the most important thing for safe drivers is to avoid driving drunk or under the influence of drugs.
