Some Doctors Refuse to Treat Fat Women, Survey Finds

Some South Florida doctors are refusing to treat otherwise-healthy women because they are too fat, the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Sun Sentinel reports.

The newspaper says that 15 of the 105 South Florida obstetrics-gynecology practices it surveyed turn down new patients who exceed obesity limits, with weight cut-offs starting at 200 pounds.

Doctors explained that they do so because obesity brings a higher risk of medical complications and because exam tables and other equipment sometimes can’t safely bear patients beyond certain weights.

Dr. Albert Triana, a South Miami obstetrician, also raised legal concerns, saying he and his partner refuse to treat obese women because of the fear of being sued.

“People don’t realize the risk we’re taking by taking care of these patients. There’s more risk of something going wrong,” Triana said, adding that “everything is more complicated with an obese patient.”

The office manager for another South Florida ob-gyn practice said that its doctors don’t treat women weighing more than 250 pounds because the physicians aren’t experts in obesity and don’t want to end up sending their patients to specialists.

The Sun Sentinel said doctors also are allowed to drop patients if, for instance, they believe they lack the medical skills to properly treat them. But those kinds of decisions typically are made after assessing the individual’s condition during an exam, not by ruling out an entire group, said Dr. Robert Yelverton, a board member of the Florida Obstetric and Gynecologic Society who criticized the practice of rejecting obese patients.

“Overweight people need doctors,” he said. “I don’t know where a patient in that situation would go if every practice had that policy.”

These are probably the same doctors who ask women if they are too fat to have sex. My answer is, “You will never find out.”
