Ronald McDonald could wind up fired if a business watchdog group and hundreds of health care professionals have their way.
Boston-based Corporate Accountability International ran a full-page letter to McDonald’s Corp. CEO Jim Skinner in six major U.S. newspapers Wednesday, demanding that the fast food giant “stop marketing junk food to children.”
The letter, signed by 550 health care professionals and activists, criticizes McDonald’s for using toys and its iconic clown, Ronald McDonald, to get children to eat junk foods. “The rise of health conditions like diabetes and heart disease mirrors the growth of your business — growth driven in large part by children’s marketing,” the letter said.
It was published in time for the company’s annual meeting today, where shareholders soundly defeated a proposal the activist group had helped craft asking McDonald’s to issue a report on its responses to childhood obesity, the Associated Press reports. Still, the activists are likely to continue their campaign against McDonald’s.
Among those who signed the letter was John F. Banzhaf III, a professor of public interest law at George Washington University and a public health advocate who has filed two lawsuits against McDonald’s. Banzhaf issued a statement saying that “the use of a clown to lure kids under the golden arches obviously undermines McDonald’s argument that it isn’t unfairly appealing to kids.”
On Wednesday, the company countered with a statement headlined, “Ronald McDonald is Here to Stay.” It called the company’s food “high quality” and said the company’s meals provide choices that parents appreciate.
“McDonald’s cares about kids,” the statement added. “We understand the importance of children’s health and nutrition and are committed to being part of the dialogue and solution.”
Further, the statement pointed out, its clown is the face of Ronald McDonald House Charities, which provides housing to the families of critically ill children while they are hospitalized.
Banzhaf disagrees. “Ronald McDonald is a big fat liability to a company which lures children into eating too much big fat food,” he said.

Ronald McDonald is not a villain!
This blog pretty much sums up my views: http://blog.dannomack.com/2011/05/19/ronald-mcdonald-remorseless-child-murderer.aspx
Who buys the kids food? Parents need to parent and teach their kids to make good decisions. Mickey D’s doesn’t “lure” me to buy a Coke each morning on the way to work. I choose to turn in there and buy it.
