Amid Aftershocks, Japan Widens Radiation Evacuation Zone

Japanese authorities expanded the evacuation zone around the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant due to deepened concerns about the health effects of radiation escaping from the complex.

The decision on expanding the evacuation was disclosed Monday even before northeastern Japan was hit with a string of strong aftershocks, including a quake that, by early accounts, had a magnitude possibly as high as 7.1.

According to the Guardian, the Japanese government’s chief spokesman, Yukio Edano, said the current 12-mile evacuation zone — from which about 70,000 people already have been removed — would be extended to five other communities, including the village of Iitate, which lies 25 miles from the Fukushima plant.

The village’s 5,000 residents were told to prepare to leave their homes, although the evacuation would not take place immediately as radiation levels presented no urgent threat to public health. “These new evacuation plans are meant to ensure safety against risks of living there for half a year or one year,” Edano said.

The evacuation plan, Reuters said, primarily is aimed at children, pregnant women and hospital patients.

The International Atomic Energy Agency previously has pressured Japan to widen the scope of its evacuation, and the U.S. has advised its citizens to avoid going within 50 miles of the reactors.

The aftershocks that struck Monday, which reportedly led to at least two deaths, came on the one-month anniversary of the 9.0-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami that triggered Japan’s nuclear crisis. The disaster’s death toll is expected to reach 20,000 or more.

Monday’s shaking temporarily knocked water pumps cooling three reactors offline, and forced cleanup crews to delay a plan to remove highly radioactive water from one of the reactors. The aftershock also left more than 200,000 people without power.

“Not before time” – the disaster management is an even greater disaster then the disaster itself.
Now, with more radiation leaking and being deposited through the air by rainfall, one should know:
