Common household chemicals found in non-stick pans and food packaging may be affecting hormone levels in some women, causing them to enter menopause earlier, according to a new study.
Researchers at the University of West Virginia found a possible link between the onset of menopause and compounds called perfluorocarbons, or PFCs, by analyzing the blood samples of nearly 26,000 women ages 18 to 65. Overall, the study, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, concludes that the odds of having entered menopause were “significantly higher” in women with the most elevated levels of PFCs in their blood.
“The higher the perfluorocarbons, the earlier the menopause,” co-author Dr. Sarah Knox told WebMD Health News. Early menopause before the age of 40 is linked with increased risks of heart disease and with bone loss, which can raise the risk of osteoporosis.
Knox cautioned that it was not clear whether PFCs actually caused early menopause. But one perfluorocarbon, PFOC, affects levels of the hormone estradiol, and women enter menopause as their estradiol level declines.
Environmentalists have long been concerned about the effects of PFCs on health. ”This is the first study to our knowledge that looks specifically at menopause timing,” said Dr. Olga Naidenko, a senior scientist at the Environmental Working Group in Washington, D.C. “It really demonstrates that these kinds of chemical are very toxic.”
Some companies have been responding to the health concerns by eliminating their use of PFCs. According to the Daily Mail, 3M stopped using the chemicals in Scotchgard in 2002 and DuPont, which has used PFCs in Teflon, has agreed to phase them out by 2015.

DuPont’s truculent and evasive Management for years has insisted this extraordinarily toxic, likely cancer-causing Teflon chemical, C8 or PFOA is perfectly SAFE, “without risk”, “humanly harmless”. In short, PFOA, according to the executives of this rogue chemical conglomerate and their PR con artists is as pure and innocent as Snow White. This most recent medical study and numerous other independently performed studies cry the exact opposite. PFOA is indeed and in fact fraught with potential dangers and definite health risks.
