9 Alabama Hospital Patients Die After Receiving Tainted IV Nutrition

Nine critically ill patients who received nutrition from contaminated intravenous bags have died, and 10 others were harmed, at six hospitals in Alabama.

As the Associated Press reports, all of the 19 patients were critically ill before receiving the IV and being infected with a bacteria known as serratia marcescens. State officials say, however, that it has not been definitively determined that the deaths were caused by the serratia marcescens. “There is nothing to suggest the deaths were directly related to the bacterial infection,” said Donald Williamson, a state health officer.

State officials were initially notified of the outbreak on March 16, at which point they determined that a nutritional supplement containing therein, known as TPN, was the source of the bacteria. The manufacturer of the bags and their contents, Birmingham-based Meds IV, has issued a recall order for all that have been manufactured this year.

Officials also said that they believed the outbreak, which occurred in hospitals mainly in and near Birmingham, was controlled. “This does not, based on everything we know right now, pose a threat to anyone that we have not already identified as part of the investigation,” Williamson said, according to the Birmingham News.

Serratia marcescens is a bacteria that frequently grows in moist or humid areas. Infected patients, who suffer such symptoms as fever, shock and breathing problems, can be successfully treated if the illness is caught early.

Has there been any reports of this problem in Colorado Hospitals?
I have a friend who has developed a severe bacterial infection and is hospitalized. He recently received IV nutrition at Centennial Hospital.

Infection outbreak in Alabama hospitals, what is it’s implication? Contaminated IV bags linked to Serratia marcescens bacteria. http://redpenredtemper.info/?p=155 cited references on the germs threat.

My husband had a hip replacement on March 15th, 2011. Since then he has had 3 more and is in a long term skilled nursing because of the Serratia Marceslans Bacteria – We almost lost him Friday night – had to have 3 units of blood. The surgery was done in Houston Texas. Tell me something about this disease. His infection Dr. didn’t want me to know – but I ask the surgeron and he give it to me. I am very worried about him. At this time he has an open wound with a vacuum suction. Please let me know anything about it. I would appreciate it.
