The president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has advised the group’s ranks to soft-pedal the risk of a rare cancer for women seeking breast implants.
As The New York Times reports, in a Feb. 3 online seminar, Dr. Phil Haeck advised plastic surgeons to avoid the terms “cancer,” “tumor,” “malignancy” and “disease,” instead relying on “condition” to describe anaplastic large-cell lymphoma. The disease, also known as ALCL, is an immune system cancer — albeit an extremely uncommon one — that recently was linked to breast implants.
The comments by Dr. Haeck were made public Thursday by the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen, which was alerted by a doctor who said the society president’s advice to colleagues made him uncomfortable. In a statement, the plastic surgeons’ group accused Public Citizen of taking the quotes out of context.
“Far from intending to trivialize or minimize the issue, Dr. Haeck’s extemporaneous remarks were well understood by physicians present to mean that the type of ALCL that has been observed in possible association with breast implants does not appear to have the malignant course of classic ALCL which is a systemic disease,” the statement read.
The Times reported that it viewed the hour-long seminar and that Dr. Haeck, in fact, did advise his audience to call the lymphoma a “condition” when talking to patients “rather than disturb them by saying this is a cancer, this is a malignancy.”
The Food and Drug Administration announced Jan. 26 that breast implants seem to a cause a slight uptick in the probability of the disease. ALCL is distinct from breast cancer, but in cases when it occurred following breast implant surgery, it usually developed in the scar tissue in the victim’s breast.
It has been documented in only 60 cases among the five to 10 million women with implants around the world. That rate of incidence, though very low, is higher than the rate in the population at large, which amounts to three cases out of every 100 million women.
