Ford’s Truck Recall Too Small, Regulators Say

Federal regulators are far from satisfied with Ford Motor Co.’s recall earlier this week of 135,000 F-150 trucks.

As The New York Times reports, officials from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration say their investigations found, in all, that as many as 1.3 million of the trucks from the 2005 and 2006 model years had problems that could cause the airbags to deploy unintentionally.

That represents the most extensive case of inadvertent airbag deployment that the agency has documented. And, according to records cited by the Times concerning the long-running dispute, NHTSA is pressing Ford to recall all of the 1.3 million identified trucks, a move that would cost the company far more money and take a bigger toll on its reputation.

Ford, however, is resisting. The company, as part of its defense, says that drivers of the trucks with the potential problem will see a warning light in their vehicles indicating that they need to be serviced.

Also, the company says that the 135,000 trucks already recalled represent those most likely to suffer an inadvertent deployment.

But the agency, in a letter sent to the company this month, countered that even Ford dealers responsible for servicing the car are largely unaware of the problem, and the issue shouldn’t be treated as a garden variety maintenance issue.

NHTSA also has rejected Ford’s argument that the risk of injury is very slim in the event of an deployment. It says the deployment, which sounds like a gunshot, could cause a driver to lose control of the truck.

Both sides accuse the other of skewing the data. In an email to the Times, Ford spokesman Walter Sherwood minimized the disagreement, saying “we are proud of the manner we work together to address safety matters in an open and transparent manner.”

This is bullshit!!! So your saying Ford is refusing to fix this problem? So when people die thier willing to pay out muti millions in lawsuits? If a bag deploys for no reason while your driving down the hwy, and scares the hell out of you, as it punches you in the face causing you to go off a mountain rd., or kill some one in a car next to you, Ford is saying thats tottally OK!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!! When I paid 43 thousand bucks for my F150 in 05, I think that gave me the right to expect perfection in my purchase!!!! And if not it IS FORDS PURE RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE IT PERFECT!!! NO QUESTION!!!! What? Are we really gonna act like the middle east now and not give a damm about our people and customers???
