More than 200 children in eastern China are suffering from lead poisoning as a result of contamination from nearby battery factories.
As reported by Reuters, the sickened children in Gaohe, some just a couple of months old, have been showing classic symptoms of lead poisoning such as fatigue and lack of appetite.
Children suspected of being afflicted are having their blood tested for lead content. Only those with lead concentrations at least two-and-a-half times above the level considered harmful are being sent to a children’s hospital in the provincial capital of Hefei.
The two factories blamed for the poisoning have been shut down. They were located just steps away from the residential area where the ill children live, which is in violation of the law, according to state media.
“Children are precious to us,” Li Xiaoai, grandmother of a sickened three-year-old, told Reuters. “You tell me what I can do. I don’t have many requests. The government has to stand up and give the children some answers and help.”
In addition to anemia and high blood pressure, lead poisoning can cause lasting damage to the kidneys and the nervous system.
The clash between the profit motives and public health and product and food safety in China is an issue that has been increasingly contentious in recent years. In the most notorious incident, 300,000 children were made sick and six perished after consuming contaminated milk in 2008.
As FairWarning noted yesterday, China has increased its scrutiny of dairy producers in response to the 2008 incident.
