The Tucson shooting rampage that left six people dead and a U.S. congresswoman in critical condition after a bullet passed through her brain has sparked calls for stricter weapons laws, but most politicians say the chances are slim.
Despite the outrage over the attack, which claimed the lives of a 9-year-old girl and a federal judge, The New York Times reports that politicians are less open to tougher gun laws than ever before.
“This kind of legislation is very difficult,” said Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y. “The fact is Congress has not done any gun legislation in years.”
Two related factors feed the pessimism among gun control advocates. The first is a deep cultural attachment to firearms in many parts of the U.S., which is evident from the gun shows still scheduled in Arizona and elsewhere in the Southwest in the coming weeks.
“Once you get out of the Northeast, guns are a part of daily life,” King said.
The second factor is the powerful and sophisticated gun lobby. The National Rifle Association was mostly silent in the days after the Tucson shooting, expressing sympathy for the victims and saying that it would have further comment only after the funerals and memorial services for the victims.
Its recent quiet notwithstanding, the NRA remains a formidable barrier to reform.
“Listen, any kind of bill the NRA is against is always a problem,” said Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y., a longtime gun-control advocate who is sponsoring one of the new gun bills in Congress. Her proposal would ban large-capacity ammunition magazines.
Indeed, McCarthy’s description of the bill she is sponsoring illustrates the tricky politics regarding gun control. “This is not a gun control bill,” she said. “I like to use the word ‘gun safety bills.’ And this one just addresses the narrow issue of these clips.”

What outcry? Link? The only outcry I have seen so far is an editorial outcry from left-leaning papers like the NY Times. Not a bunch of enraged people at Congressmen’s offices, like the real outcry that occurred when the Congress was passing Obamacare. You have no idea what an outcry means.
