Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Releases Top Picks for 2011 Cars

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has released its safety ratings for the 2011 model year, with 66 vehicles earning the rank of Top Safety Pick, the highest designation possible. This represents a big jump over the 2010 model year, when vehicles did not score as well due to stricter testing procedures.

“In just a year, automakers have more than doubled the number of vehicles that meet the criteria for Top Safety Pick,” Adrian Lund, president of the institute, said in a statement. “That gives consumers shopping for a safer new car or SUV — from economy to luxury models — plenty of choices to consider in most dealer showrooms.”

The top manufacturers on this year’s list were Volkswagen and Hyundai, with nine models apiece among the 66 with top ratings.

Twenty-one of the top-ranked vehicles were from American automakers. General Motors and Ford Motor Co., both had eight cars or trucks tabbed as Top Safety Picks. All told, 40 cars, 25 SUVs, and one minivan earned top ratings.

The ratings are based on crash tests that measures vehicle performance in front, rear and side impact collisions, and in rollovers. The tests became more stringent in 2010, when the Institute included roof strength as a performance measure in rollover wrecks.

As a result, the number of high scorers initially plummeted, with only 27 vehicles named top picks in the initial testing of 2010 models.

More than 33,000 people were killed in 2009 in vehicle crashes, a number that has been steadily decreasing in recent years. Some 12,000 died in head-on crashes, 8,000 in rollovers, and 6,000 in side impact collisions, according to data from the Institute.
