The head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission says her agency will take on the long-overlooked issue of football helmet safety.
As reported by The Associated Press, Inez Tenenbaum, chairwoman of the CPSC, told a Senate panel Thursday that she has already been in contact with the nonprofit regulatory body, the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment, on implementing stricter standards.
“I will use the bully pulpit as chairman of the Consumer Products Safety Commission to make sure that the standards-making organization is looking at all the best engineering and science,” she said.
Football leagues from the NFL on down have faced scrutiny in recent years because of research linking on-the-field head injuries to debilitating problems later in life, including premature dementia, depression and increased risk of suicide.
NOCSAE’s present rules for football helmets are designed to protect against skull fractures and brain bleeding, without addressing the recent research on the danger of concussions in football. Among the proposals frequently mentioned by safety advocates is the use of a soft outer shell on football helmets, to reduce the impact absorbed by the brain and skull following a blow to the head.
Changes to equipment aren’t the only modifications to the sport; the NFL has cracked down heavily on helmet-to-helmet hits, which often lead to concussions.
Tenenbaum’s statement comes just days after Sen. Tom Udall, Democrat of New Mexico, called upon the CPSC to investigate the adequacy of football helmets in preventing concussions.

why can’t Helmet producers put a half in of foam rubber around the outside of the football helmet
i agree with the suggestion about coating the outside of the helmet with 1/4 to 1/2 inch of foam padding to help absorb the initial blow to the head. it also would cut down on knee and other injuries caused by the hard helmet shell. the shiny multi-colored helmets might be showy but that’s not their purpose. helmet makers like riddell should test this as well as other suggestions. for this particular suggestion they would not have to alter their existing interior design.
