Auto Safety Complaints Accelerate in 2010

Complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about automotive safety hazards soared in 2010.

According to research from Edmunds.com, by midway through December the NHTSA received 40,000 complaints, roughly four times the number in recent years.

A major driver of the complaints was Toyota, whose struggles with flaws such as unintended acceleration have provoked the recall of some 10 million automobiles in the U.S. in recent years. The Japanese auto giant had 87 safety complaints for every 100,000 vehicles sold, up from 37 a year ago, and the worst ratio of any car maker.

“This stuff just skyrocketed,” Jeremy Anwyl, chief executive of Edmunds, told the Los Angeles Times. “Toyota was the trigger, but consumers are more sensitive and have more knowledge about how to complain.”

After Toyota came Nissan, which had a complaint ratio of 62 per 100,000 cars and trucks sold, and Volkswagen, which generated 58 per 100,000.

“Safety is the top priority of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and information from consumers is a vital tool the agency uses to identify defects,” said NHTSA spokesman Eric Bolton.
