The National Rifle Association — a perennial top donor to Republican candidates — has endorsed a number of House Democrats facing tough reelection fights in this year’s election, according to the Christian Science Monitor.
The NRA’s history of support for Republican candidates may reflect a policy that is more pragmatic than partisan, as in some cases it has endorsed pro-gun Democrats over pro-gun Republicans.
Since 1989, 85 percent of campaign contributions from gun-rights groups have gone to Republicans. However, donations to Democratic congressional candidates have jumped from 12 percent in 2008 to 20 percent for this year’s election.
Democrats generally have reined in their attacks on the gun industry since the 1994 election, when support from gun-rights groups helped Republicans take over the House. The party has increasingly put forward pro-gun moderates in a bid to regain that territory from Republicans.
And these pro-gun Democrats are making an impact on the Hill. When the Obama administration unsuccessfully proposed reviving the assault weapons ban in March 2009, 65 House Democrats signed a letter opposing it. More recently, House Democrats exempted the NRA from reporting requirements in the House version of a campaign finance overhaul. The bill was not taken up in the Senate.
Now the NRA is rallying behind moderate Democrats who favor gun rights — a move that may save some of them from defeat. The Democrats endorsed by the NRA are among the most vulnerable in the Republican quest to take back the House.
