The deep-water drilling ban in the Gulf of Mexico is set to expire on Nov. 30, but the oil industry might not have a fleet of ships ready to handle emergency spills until three months later, Bloomberg reports.
Eventually, Marine Well Containment Co., a nonprofit company founded by big U.S. and European oil companies, is supposed to be capable of dealing with spills up to 100,000 barrels a day in waters as deep as 10,000 feet. But it will take the company until March to assemble its stopgap network of tankers, pipelines and other gear for the job.
Big oil representatives say that it will be 18 months before a fleet built specifically for the purpose of containing spills will be ready.
In the meantime, once drilling resumes, the Gulf of Mexico remains vulnerable to another spill such as the April catastrophe at BP’s Deep Horizon rig, which precipitated the ban on drilling at depths of more than 500 feet. Eleven BP employees were killed in the BP oil rig explosion, which caused the largest oil spill in U.S. history — as much as 62,000 barrels a day, according to government estimates.
The company and the government faced criticism for delays in containing the spill, which exacerbated its impact. In one development underscoring the environmental damage, Oregon State University researchers said last week that early indications show that there was a 40-fold increase in certain carcinogenic hydrocarbons in the gulf between May and June.

We need to be aware of the people we elect in 2012 . Mitt Romney has major issues with an oil spill litigation case in Massachusetts when he was governor . The litigation eight years after the spill looks like the Valdez Oil Spill again!
Mitt Romney was the 70th Governor of Massachusetts from Jan 2,2003 to Jan 4,2007. During his one term the Buzzards Bay oil spill happened during April 2003 .
On April 27, 2003, eight years ago the Bouchard Barge B-120 hit an obstacle in Buzzards Bay, creating a 12-foot rupture in its hull and discharging an estimated 100,000 gallons of No. 6 oil. The oil is known to have affected an estimated 90 miles of shoreline, killed 450 numerous bird species, and recreational use of the bay, such as shell fishing and boating.
Since the 2003 oil spill the US Coast Guard has appealed the 2004 Massachusetts Oil Spill Prevention Act and one Mattapoisett, Massachusetts property damage lawsuit has dragged on for eight years. Republican Mitt Romney is laying the groundwork for a possible White House campaign in 2012, hiring a team of staff members and consultants.
