Graco Children’s Products Inc. is recalling 2 million of its strollers in response to reports of four infants who died of strangulation while using the company’s carriages between 2003 and 2005.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which announced the recall, said it also is aware of five babies getting trapped in the strollers, suffering cuts and bruises.
According to the agency, which urged consumers to stop using the product immediately, the strangulation danger is greatest for infants less than 12 months. If not harnessed in the stroller, infants can pass through the opening between the stroller tray and seat bottom, and are then at risk of having their head or neck trapped by the tray.
The recall covers older versions of the Graco Quattro Tour and MetroLite strollers manufactured before the introduction in January 2008 of a voluntary industry standard requiring larger openings between the stroller’s tray and the seat bottom.
The strollers being recalled were sold between November, 2000, and December, 2007, by nationwide retail chains such as Babies ‘R’ Us, Burlington Coat Factory, Kmart, Meijers, Sears, Target and Walmart.
Earlier this year, Graco recalled its Passage, Alano and Spree strollers due to design flaws in the hinges of the stroller canopy that led to fingertip amputations of five children.
