Warning Issued on Risk of Eye Damage from Laser Pointers

Doctors are urging caution with laser pointers after a 15-year-old Swiss boy burned his eyes while trying to create his own laser light show, HealthDay reports.

Though the boy’s vision has nearly returned to normal, the laser pointer caused significant internal bleeding and scarring.

“These high-power laser products are very dangerous,” Dr. Martin Schmid, head of the retina unit in the department of ophthalmology at Lucerne Cantonal Hospital in Switzerland and an author of a report on the boy’s case, told HealthDay.

In the letter report in The New England Journal of Medicine,  the authors warn that laser pointers can cause immediate and severe retinal damage — and even blindness.

A laser pointer is a small laser used to highlight something of interest — such as information on a chart — by projecting an intense spot of light onto it. Pointers come in different strengths and some are relatively harmless. But Schmid said some are not clearly labeled, so it can be hard to tell how powerful they are.

“Every laser pointer which is capable of burning holes into paper or of lighting matches or of popping balloons is highly dangerous for the eye and must not be used by non-professionals,” he said.

He also warns that even low-powered lasers can be changed to high-powered ones by following online instructions.
