The rock group Smashing Pumpkins is scheduled early next month to do what it’s done hundreds of times before: headline a major concert. But, because of the sponsors, this event is proving controversial for the band.
Jakarta’s Java Rockin’ Land festival, which from Oct. 8 to 10 also will feature such bands as the Vines and Stereophonics, is sponsored by Gudang Garam, a major Indonesian cigarette manufacturer.
The involvement of the tobacco giant has led to an outcry, both in the U.S. and globally. Smashing Pumpkins is the highest-profile American band on the slate of performers, which has led to charges that it is helping further the popularity of smoking among minors.
“As long as this event is sponsored by a tobacco company, any band that participates should know that it is helping market cigarettes to children,” said Matthew L. Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. “If these bands reject tobacco sponsorship, they can send a powerful message that they care about the health of the world’s children and will not allow their name and talent to be used to market deadly tobacco products.”
Smashing Pumpkins could not be reached for comment.
Unlike many nations in the developed world, the tobacco industry has few restrictions on advertising in Indonesia, and smoking is widespread. According to Tobacco-Free Kids, more than a third of the population smokes, and 200,000 Indonesians die each year from tobacco-related causes.
Indonesia is also no stranger to controversial tobacco sponsorships of musical shows. Since 2008, performers Alicia Keys and Kelly Clarkson have both succeeded in having tobacco-company sponsors of concerts in Indonesia removed after threatening to cancel the events.
