Scientists to Study Heath Effects of BP Oil Spill

Major oil spills eventually come under intense investigation, but one issue often gets ignored: the impact on public health. With the disastrous Gulf of Mexico spill, however, the topic is going to be explored.

The Associated Press reports that a panel of experts convened by the Institute of Medicine, a branch of the National Academy of Sciences, began sketching plans for the study at a meeting in Tampa, Fla., earlier this week.

Scientists working with the institute say that they hope to enroll in the study 27,000 people who aided in the clean-up work. Three likely areas of focus: the impact of exposure to harmful chemicals; the mental toll on people in the region, particularly those involved in the clean-up; and dangers to the seafood supply.

In the months after the spill, more than 300 people in Louisiana, many of them clean-up workers, sought medical attention. Symptoms included headache and nausea, which are associated with acute exposure to hydrocarbons that are released by oil.

In addition to Louisiana, whose coastline was closest to the Deep Horizon rig, the study will focus on four other states affected by the accident.

The spill, the largest in the history of the oil industry, pumped close to 5 million barrels of crude into the Gulf of Mexico. Thanks to a permanent cement plug, government officials announced that the well was dead on Sunday.

The people behind the project say that they hope the study can help fill a void in what is known about the impact of oil spills. According to the Associated Press, of the 38 large oil spills in the past 50 years, only eight have been studied for the impact on public health.

BP, the operator of the Deep Horizon rig, has contributed $10 million to fund the study.

Thanks for writing about this. Something else that you might find interesting and related to saving the ocean is talked about in video I saw on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wgai3XjhVQ.

We could use the 2003 oil spill in Massachusetts to conclude a study .On April 27, 2003, Bouchard Barge 120 hit an obstacle in Buzzards Bay, creating a 12-foot rupture in its hull and discharging an estimated 98,000 gallons of No. 6 oil. Approximately 450 birds were immediately killed by the oil spill .
