Oil Refiner to Spend $142 Million, Ending Air Pollution Case

Murphy Oil Corp. has agreed to pay $1.25 million in penalties for violating the Clean Air Act at its refineries in Wisconsin and Louisiana, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Justice Department announced.

As part of the settlement, Murphy also agreed to spend $142 million to upgrade pollution controls at the two refineries. The move is expected to cut emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide by some 1,400 tons per year. The pollutants are breathing hazards that can contribute to asthma in children.

The settlement “is good news for the residents of communities living near these refineries, who will be able to breathe easier knowing that the air in their communities will be cleaner,” said Cynthia Giles of the EPA’s office of enforcement.

Murphy, based in El Dorado, Ark., has operations in England and Asia, along with the U.S. and Canada. Tom McKinlay, a senior vice-president, said in a press release that Murphy looks forward “to working with the EPA and the states as we implement these improvements.”
