Infant Sleep Positioners Can Be Deadly, Regulators Warn

Infant sleep positioners — marketed as devices to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome by keeping babies on their backs — have been linked to at least 12 deaths since 1997 and should no longer be used, federal officials are saying in a new consumer warning.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the joint warning by the Food and Drug Administration and the Consumer Product Safety Commission marks a more aggressive tactic in tackling infant hazards, even though no recall was issued.

The move contrasts with previous product-by-product recalls of cribs and other potentially hazardous baby items, which can leave parents in doubt about similar products on the market.

Authorities said that infants who roll over in the night can suffocate or become trapped between a sleep positioner and the side of a crib or bassinet. Sleep positioners typically are sleeping mats with bolsters on the side.

“We urge parents and caregivers to take our warning seriously and stop using these sleep positioners, so that children can have a safer sleep,” said Inez Tenenbaum, chair of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, in a prepared statement. Federal regulators said they were unaware of any scientific studies demonstrating that infant sleep positioners help prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, a trade group representing makers of infant sleep positioners, defended the products, saying that they “promote safe sleep practices” when used correctly. The group said its members would continue to sell the products unless there is a recall or other federal action.

However, the Tribune reported that Babies R Us, Toys R Us and Target said they planned to stop selling the items, and at least five manufacturers told the FDA they planned to withdraw their products.
