Hyundai Recalling Nearly 140,000 Cars Over Steering Defect

South Korean automaker Hyundai is recalling as many as 139,500 of its 2011 Sonata vehicles because of a possible steering problem that could cause drivers to lose control. The cars being recalled were built between December 11, 2009 and September 10, 2010, according to the recall notice.

Dealership technicians will inspect the steering mechanisms on recalled cars to make sure they are assembled properly and tightened sufficiently, The Wall Street Journal reported. The repairs are expected to begin in October.

Hyundai said it knows of fewer than 10 vehicles with the steering issue, and that no accidents or injuries have resulted. A company spokesman told the Los Angeles Times that the owners reporting the problem generally described feeling a “looseness” when they were steering, or heard a sound when turning.

Although the car has been on the road since earlier this year, it is still labeled a 2011 model.

Earlier this year, Hyundai recalled 46,000 of the 2011 Sonata sedans in South Korea and 1,300 in the United States because of potentially faulty front-door latches.
