Child Traffic Fatalities Decline, But Only Slightly

The decline in the number of child deaths in traffic accidents failed to keep pace with the nation’s overall decrease in road fatalities, according to statistics newly released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

According to NHTSA data, 1,314 children under the age of 14 were killed last year, a 2.7 percent decline from 2008. By comparison, the agency previously reported that the overall decline in fatalities last year was 9.7 percent.

Officials said that the percentage of children using the proper car safety seats has plateaued in some age groups. The only age category reported to show improvement in the use of safety seats was children 1 to 3, with 96 percent locked in properly in 2009, up from 92 percent in 2008.

However, in the 4-to-7 group, the percentage using booster seats was only 41 percent, which is especially worrying for federal authorities. Booster seats should be used after a child grows out of the car seat and until he or she is approximately 4-foot-9, but authorities worry that too many parents are endangering their children by seating them like adults once they become too big for the child seat.

“Children who graduate too soon from their safety seats are at risk of serious injury,” said Ray LaHood, the secretary of the Department of Transportation, which is the NHTSA’s parent agency. “Parents and caregivers should ensure that safety seats are installed correctly and should always use them.”

There is something basically wrong with a system that requires special oversight and training, and purchase of special equipment -i.e. special safety seats to accomplish an otherwise worthwhile goal. Let’s back up and take a better apprach.

This is total BS. Children over 2 DO NOT fair any better in car seats or boosters. Steven Levitt (freakonomics) already proved this 5 years ago with *actual* data… instead of the fear mongering tactics used here.
