California will restrict the amount of the toxic metal cadmium used in children’s jewelry, a move expected to establish an unofficial safety standard across the country.
The Associated Press reports that health officials have worried that widespread use of cadmium in children’s jewelry could lead to long-term poisoning in kids who bite or suck on the jewelry. The metal, a carginogen, has been associated with kidney and bone problems, and some research suggests that it can harm brain development in children.
Cadmium was substituted for lead by some manufacturers in cheap metal jewelry after Congress, responding to safety concerns about Chinese-made products, effectively banned the use of lead.
California’s new restriction, in a bill signed into law by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, takes effect in 2012. It limits the amount of cadmium allowed in jewelry for kids 6 and under to no more than three-hundredths of 1 percent. By comparison, an investigation by the AP earlier this year of Chinese-made jewelry found an item that was 91 percent cadmium.
Three other states — Connecticut, Illinois and Minnesota — have passed laws this year limiting cadmium in jewelry, and bills are pending in Congress. But, AP says, the size and influence of California’s market makes the cadmium limit effectively a national policy.
The Fashion Jewelry and Accessories Trade Association has lobbied against state bans, instead pushing for a voluntary national standard based on how much cadmium can escape into a child’s mouth while sucking or chewing on jewelry.
On its website, the association says cadmium “is not being widely substituted for lead in children’s jewelry” and that “there are no reported adverse health effects in either children or adults from its presence.”

I do agree with the restrict. kids have to be protected. hopefully all states would do the right thing. nobody want something that would harm their kids.
