Abbott Laboratories is recalling millions of containers of the popular powdered infant formula Similac after two consumers reported finding beetles in the product.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration inspectors also found beetles and beetle larvae at one of the company’s plants in Sturgis, Mich., the Los Angeles Times reports.
“The decision to recall the products was made in advance of the two consumer reports, which are being investigated,” Abbott spokeswoman Melissa Brotz told the Times.
A statement by the FDA says the formula poses no immediate health risk to infants. However, infants might refuse to drink it, or have stomach problems if they do, the agency says.
Abbott has set up a hotline to answer questions from concerned customers, and consumers can check the recalled lot numbers on the company’s website.
