Thirty seven children have died so far this year after being left in hot cars, including eight in the last eight days, says KidsAndCars, an advocacy group that issued a warning to parents on Thursday.
About half of the children succumbed to heat stroke after being left by parents and caregivers, while the others climbed into cars on their own, the group said.
“This heartbreaking news can only be met with the need to increase awareness about these predictable but very preventable tragedies,” said Janette Fennell, founder and president of KidsAndCars.org.
According to Jan Null, a San Francisco State University professor who has collected data on heat-related deaths in cars since the late 1990s, an average of 37 children die annually of hyperthermia caused by heat stroke, the total already reached this year.
Earlier this summer, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a warning to parents and caregivers, outlining ways to remember that a child is in the vehicle.
