Many American consumers believe that doctors are showing too many symptoms of drug company influence, the Consumer Reports National Research Center reports in a new prescription drug survey.
The survey — based on a national poll of 1,150 adults who take prescription drugs — found that 69 percent of the respondents say that pharmaceutical companies have too much sway in doctors’ prescription decisions. The survey also found that half of those polled say doctors are too eager to recommend a drug rather than consider alternative treatment.
Among other findings:
- 81 percent said they are concerned about companies giving gifts to physicians who often prescribe their drugs.
- 72 percent said they were unhappy about the payments pharmaceutical companies give to doctors for testimonials, or for serving as a company spokesman.
- 39 percent reported taking some action to reduce what they spend on medications.
