A new survey reveals the immense challenge facing China as it tries to reduce smoking in the world’s most tobacco-addicted country.
Less than a quarter of the Chinese population believes smoking causes disease like lung cancer, and fewer than one-sixth of the country’s 301 million smokers plan to kick the habit, according to a survey conducted this year by the Chinese government and the World Health Organization, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Thirty-eight percent of respondents said they have seen others smoking in health-care centers, despite a ban on lighting up, while seven of 10 non-smokers said they have been exposed to second-hand smoke in a typical week, AFP reports.
But there are signs that officials are confronting the problem. Public “no smoking” signs are increasingly common, and tobacco advertising is prohibited on the radio, television and newspapers.
“China’s longstanding high prevalence of tobacco addiction deserves the same level of concern as an outbreak of SARS or H1N1,” said WHO China representative Michael O’Leary in a statement. “Chronic conditions now constitute the lion’s share of the burden of disease in China.” Up to one million Chinese die every year from lung cancer or cardiovascular disease directly related to smoking, according to the AFP.
The WHO is conducting similar “Global Adult Tobacco Surveys” in 16 low and middle-income countries, where more than half of the world’s smokers live. The survey, the WHO said, “enhances countries’ capacity to design, implement and evaluate tobacco control programs.”

Have they been living under a rock for the past 20 some years? No matter what country your from or what nationality you are the media has been pumping so much information about how bad smoking is and how quickly it can kill you. I would love to see exactly who they used in this survey group what demografics or from what region they got these responces. Online surveys are a great way to gather quick and vital information to any company however the results can always be deciving.
Very Nice website. I recently built mine and i was looking for some design ideas and your website gave me some. Did you develop the website alone?
Cheers
