Steering Wiring Problem Prompts Subaru to Recall More Than 73,000 Vehicles

Subaru of America, Inc. is recalling 73,698 vehicles because defective wiring in the steering column could increase the risk of a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall includes Subaru Legacy and Outbacks from the 2010 model year. The vehicles were manufactured between February 16, 2009 and April 12, 2010.

A mechanical problem could cause wiring behind the steering wheel to crack and break, which could affect the function of the driver’s side airbag, transmission, and radio, horn and cruise control, the agency said.

The automaker will check vehicles for defects and make necessary repairs free of charge. Vehicle owners can contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783.
