BP’s Gusher in Gulf Could Be Capped by End of July

BP is aiming to plug its crippled Gulf Coast oil well before the end of July, a few weeks before the official government estimate of mid-August, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The company plans to use the so-called “bottom-kill” method, where a combination of mud and cement will be funneled through a relief well to stop oil from bleeding out of the well that exploded almost three months ago.

“In a perfect world with no interruptions, it’s possible to be ready to stop the well between July 20 and July 27,” the head of BP’s Gulf Coast restoration unit, Managing Director Bob Dudley, told the Journal. But threats from hurricane season make it “unlikely,” he said.

National Incident Commander Thad Allen said that the government is still planning on the mid-August deadline, but if the well could be plugged earlier “we’d all jump for joy.”

According to Allen, the relief well will not be finished for seven to 10 days, while plugging the well could take another seven to 10, and might need to be done more than once, The Washington Post reports.

“While it’s nice to be slightly ahead of schedule, I’m sticking to the middle of August because we don’t know the condition of the wellbore until we penetrate her,” Allen said.
