Toyota Motor Corp. plans to recall 270,000 Lexus and Crown vehicles worldwide in order to fix defective engines, the company announced Friday.
Lexus General Manager Mark Templin said valve springs, which are crucial engine components, have been manufactured with contaminated materials. The flaw could cause the vehicle to stall while the car is in motion.
Toyota has received complaints from more than 200 drivers in Japan, but no accidents related to faulty engines have been reported, the company said.
The global recall starts Monday and includes seven Lexus models as well as the Crown, sold mostly in Asia, Toyota spokesman Paul Nolasco told the Associated Press. Lexus said about 137,000 vehicles in the U.S. could have the engine problem.
It is the latest quality lapse for the automaker, which has recalled more than 8 million cars and trucks since last October because of problems with sticking accelerator pedals, among other defects. Just last week, the company recalled 17,000 Lexus luxury hybrids to fix a fuel spillage problem.
U.S. traffic safety officials hit the company with a record $16.4 million fine two months ago for delaying its recalls, but one analyst said Friday’s announcement was evidence that Toyota has learned to act swiftly to address manufacturing errors.
