Toxic Paint Forces Recall of McDonald’s Shrek-Themed Cups

McDonald’s has recalled 12 million of its “Shrek”-themed drinking glasses after cadmium was discovered in the cups’ painted designs, marking the fourth cadmium-related product recall this year.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the voluntary recall today and warned consumers to stop using the glasses immediately. The cadmium can move from the glass onto children’s hands and into their bodies, and is known to cause bone softening and kidney failure.

In an official statement, McDonald’s said that “an independent third-party laboratory accredited by the CPSC” evaluated the glassware and determined it to be in compliance with safety standards. Earlier this year, the CPSC recalled children’s jewelry sold at Wal-Mart, Claire’s and various discount stores. (See the previous recall announcements here, here and here.)

Arc International, which manufactured the glasses, declined to explain where the paint was made or whether Arc’s other products also use it. McDonald’s began selling the 16-ounce glasses for about $2 last month, and has thus far sold 7 million of its stock.
