The number of salmonella cases linked to Subway eateries in Illinois stands at 71 illnesses and 17 hospitalizations, though the total could grow.
Subway is working with public health agencies to investigate the outbreak of the Hvittingfoss strain of salmonella, which is a relatively rare type that typically affects only one or two people a year in Illinois. This year, the Subway outbreak crossed 22 Illinois counties.
No specific food has been linked to the outbreak, but Subway has voluntarily recalled its lettuce, green peppers, red onions and tomatoes from the dates of infection. The Illinois Department of Health has urged people who got sick after eating at Subway restaurants on or after May 10 to contact their health care providers.
For every person affected by salmonella in the United States, there are 38.6 others who get sick but go uncounted, according to a 2004 CDC study.

Both the source and distributor of the Salmonella have been identified. The bacteria was present in the tomatoes, lettuce, green peppers, and red onions distributed to several Subway restaurants by Reinhart Foodservices. The Law Group LTD is now investigating the filing of a statewide class action lawsuit against Reinhart Foodservies and Subway for distributing products and selling sandwiches containing a rare strain of the bacteria Salmonella known as Hvittingfoss between May 11 and May 25, 2010.
This particular strand of Salmonella is extremely uncommon, as it typically affects only one to two people in Illinois every year. Symptoms, which usually present themselves from six to 72 hours after exposure, include diarrhea, vomiting, fever and/or stomach cramps. Although some infected individuals may not exhibit symptoms there is, however, a possibility they could infect others. This transmission can be avoided by washing hands with soap and water often, especially after using the restroom.
Currently, 71 cases of infected Illinois residents have been confirmed in 22 counties, with the possibility of thousands having been affected.
