Strangulation Prompts Recall of 3 Million Ikea Blinds

Ikea, the Swedish furniture maker, is voluntarily recalling more than three million window blinds after one child was killed and two others nearly strangled, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada.

The recall includes Ikea’s Roller, Roll-up and Roman blinds. All three models have cords that could wrap around a child’s neck.

Last December, retailers including JCPenney, Ace Hardware and Wal-Mart recalled 50 million Roman shades and Roll-up blinds.

BusinessWeek reports that window blinds have killed 5 children this year, while 13 were killed in 2009.

The agencies warn consumers to stop using the blinds immediately. The company is offering a full refund.
