Maytag is voluntarily recalling 1.7 million dishwashers because of a potential fire hazard.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, electrical failure in the heating element of the dishwashers “can pose a serious fire hazard.” Maytag has received 12 reports of dishwasher fires, including one that claims major kitchen damage. There have been no reports of injuries.
The CPSC says consumers need to immediately stop using the appliance and cut off its power supply by shutting off fuses or circuit breakers. Consumers should also contact Maytag.
The recalled appliance was sold between February 2006 and April 2010 in stores throughout the U.S.
Maytag is part of Whirlpool Corporation, which has earmarked $75 million to pay for the recall, AP reports. The company is offering owners free in-home service repair or rebates of $150-$250 towards the purchase of a new dishwasher.
Maytag issued another major recall last March, when it recalled 1.6 million refrigerators because of a fire hazard.
Information on specific models and serial numbers can be found on the CPSC’s website.
