Lead Detected in Over 140 Children’s Foods

More than 140 children’s and baby food products in California contain lead levels exceeding those permitted by state law, according to tests performed by a nonprofit environmental group.

Included on the list are fruit juices and packaged fruits from well-known brands like Great Value, Minute Maid, Motts, Safeway, Stater Bros., Trader Joe’s and Walgreens. Some of the juices are marked “organic.”

The Environmental Law Foundation, the Oakland-based group that conducted the tests, has served notice that it will file a lawsuit unless the manufacturers and retailers reduce lead levels or place warnings on the products. The group filed the notice under California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, also known as Prop. 65.

The Environmental Law Foundation tested 398 samples of 146 apple juices, grape juices, packaged pears and peaches and fruit cocktails.

After receiving notices, companies must either reduce or eliminate the lead or place warnings on food packages. If companies do neither, the ELF said it will file suit.
