Spill Litigation Hits South Carolina Before Oil Does

As oil from the BP spill hits the Gulf Coast, businesses and homeowners as far away as South Carolina have already filed class actions against Transocean, Halliburton and BP, claiming damages to tourism and housing values, Courthouse News Service Reports.

The plaintiffs say that even if the oil has not yet reached the coast of South Carolina, the stigma of reports that it could reach their beaches will hurt them financially.

The three federal class actions say that the defendants’ negligence caused the environmental disaster, and that the spill has reached a current in the Gulf that will bring the oil to South Carolina.

According to one complaint, “”plaintiffs have experienced a significant dip in customer attendance that appears to be getting worse by the day.”

The plaintiffs include property owners and real estate and tourism companies.
