Fire Hazard Prompts GM Recall of 1.5M Vehicles

General Motors is recalling 1.5 million vehicles over concerns that a heated windshield wiper system could cause a fire. The same feature prompted a recall in 2008, and the company had its dealers install new wiring. This time, GM wants dealers to disable the feature and pay vehicle owners $100 in compensation.

GM said it could not fix the wiper design because the company that made the wiper system, Micro-Heat, no longer exists. Micro-Heat filed for bankruptcy and liquidated its assets after GM chose to withhold payments in the wake of the first recall

The car company has received five reports of fires, but no reports of injuries or crashes.

The recall affects 2006-2009 pick-ups, SUVs and passenger car models, including: 2007-2009 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe; 2006-2009 Buick Lucerne, Cadillac DTS, and Hummer H2; 2008-2009 Buick Enclave and Cadillac CTS; 2007-2009 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT; 2007-2009 Saturn Outlook; 2009 Chevrolet Traverse; and the 2007-2009 GMC Acadia, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL.

Almost 1.4 million vehicles are in the United States, while another 160,000 are abroad.

People who own or lease affected models will begin to receive letters later this month, but they can also go directly to their dealership to have the system removed.
