Congress is opening an investigation into the presence of cadmium in children’s products after a McDonald’s recall of 12 million Shrek-themed glasses, The Christian Science Monitor reports.
On Wednesday, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) sent McDonald’s a letter asking the fast-food company to detail how it ensures its products are safe. It also requested that the company send in all of the documents that pertain to the recall. A second letter was sent to the company that produced the glasses.
McDonald’s voluntarily recalled the product when cadmium was found in exterior enamel. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the glasses met federal safety standards; McDonald’s said they were recalled in “an abundance of caution.”
The CPSC is planning to release new safety standards for cadmium in all children’s products. Currently, the agency only regulates the amount of cadmium in toys.
