The U.S. Veterans Administration has proposed a new rule designed to curb the influence of drug reps on their healthcare staff. The rule, to be finalized after a 60-day comment period, would require the chief of pharmacy or other responsible official to approve educational materials and programs offered by drug representatives, “so as to ensure that those programs and materials focus on clinician education as opposed to marketing of drugs and drug-related supplies.” Drug reps would have to make appointments before entering VA facilities and would generally be restricted from areas of patient care.
The rule would also prohibit drug reps from providing meals to VA staff, and from providing gifts, drugs or educational material above the maximum value permitted under government ethics rules. VA staff would be prohibited from accepting drug samples for their personal use.
