At a congressional hearing Thursday, a top Toyota executive plans to assure lawmakers that electronics were not the cause of the sticky pedals that led to the recall of more than 8 million vehicles.
The car company has already paid a record $16.4 million fine for its slow response to reports of unintended acceleration and is trying to head off concerns that the problem has not been fixed, the Associated Press reports.
Toyota dealers have repaired nearly 3.5 million vehicles, and the automaker hired a consulting firm to review its vehicles’ electronics. The company, Exponent Inc., has performed more than 11,000 hours of tests and technical analysis.
Exponent is trying to counter an Illinois engineering professor who said at a February congressional hearing that he recreated sudden acceleration in a Toyota Tundra by short-circuiting the vehicle’s electronics.
