Safety Officials Close Six Kentucky Mines

The Mine Safety and Health Administration ordered six mines in Kentucky to stop operations because of safety violations. The closures were part of an inspection blitz by federal regulators in the wake of last month’s explosion at a West Virginia mine killed 29 workers.

Between April 19 and 23, MSHA inspected 57 mines with histories of safety violations. The six closed mines were issued a total of 238 citations. The operators of two of the six mines were also sued by the Department of Labor for alerting workers below ground that inspectors had arrived at the mines, a violation of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977.

MSHA’s announcement and full details of the inspections are here.
