GlaxoSmithKline is having a hard time finding patients for a safety study of its diabetes drug Avandia. Avandia has been on the market since 1999, but since 2007 it has been linked to a higher risk of heart attack, prompting the current clinical trial.
Two sites in the United States have withdrawn from the study, the Wall Street Journal reports. An official from one of the trial sites, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, said they pulled out because of low enrollment, not safety concerns. Glaxo would not name the other withdrawn site.
Avandia has come under fire from safety advocates and some regulators. One medical study found the drug increased the risk of heart attack by 43 percent. However, in 2007, an FDA advisory panel voted 22 to 1 to keep Avandia on the market.
Safety advocates have also criticized Glaxo for running the trial in developing countries like Pakistan, Mexico and Columbia, where the drug’s risks may not be as well known.
