FDA Proposes More Disclosure on Drug and Food Safety

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday proposed disclosing more safety information. Under the suggestions, the FDA would make public more information about drugs tests, recalls and the approval process for foreign food and drugmakers. The agency oversees the safety of food, medicine and medical devices in the United States and has long kept information on drug tests and its investigations confidential, the Associated Press reports.

The proposed changes encourage a wide range of disclosures by the agency, including: public comments about FDA-regulated products, cases brought on behalf of the FDA against a manufacturer, evaluations of foreign producers applying to export to the U.S., the most common problems found during FDA inspections, information on rejections of new drugs or medical devices, and untitled warning letters to companies.

The FDA task force’s 21 new transparency rules are posted online for public comment. The FDA is not required to follow the recommendations, which will remain on its website until July 20.
