Expert Panel Seeks Confidential Papers on H1N1

A panel of medical experts convened by the World Health Organization asked Wednesday to see confidential communications between the organization and drug companies related to last year’s H1N1 virus outbreak.

The maker of the flu vaccine Tamiflu, Roche Group, saw a $1.74 billion increase in sales thanks to last year’s flu scare. GlaxoSmithKline, Sanofi-Aventis and Baxter International also sold vaccines and antiviral medicines that benefited from the WHO’s reaction to H1N1, the Associated Press reports.

World governments spent billions buying medicines for an outbreak that never became as serious as originally portrayed. WHO’s director-general, Margaret Chan, said the world was “just plain lucky” that H1N1 wasn’t deadlier, according to the AP.

The panel asked to see any “contractual or letters of understanding” between WHO and drug companies before and after health officials declared a pandemic in June. The 29-member panel plans to release a report next year.

Over the past year, WHO has confirmed about 18,000 deaths from H1N1 — fewer than the number of people who die annually from seasonal flu.
