Cigarette Tax Will Rise 50 Cents in South Carolina

South Carolina no longer has the lowest cigarette tax in the country, after legislators overrode Gov. Mark Sanford’s veto of a tax hike. The measure raises the tax on a pack of smokes from 7 cents to 57 cents effective July 1. Missouri now has the lowest cigarette tax in the country, at 17 cents a pack.

Most of the tax money will replace temporary federal bailout funds for social services, while $5 million each will be earmarked for cancer research and smoking prevention efforts, the Associated Press reports.
