CDC: 1 in 8 Public Pools Closed for Health Violations

A review of public pool inspections by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 1 in 8 inspections in 2008 led to immediate pool closure for serious health code violations. Out of more than 120,000 inspections in 13 states reviewed by the CDC, about 12 percent found threats to public health in the water.

Contaminated swimming pools lead to about 15 to 20 stomach bug outbreaks each year, the Associated Press reports. Studies suggest that a quarter of those outbreaks could have been prevented by proper cleaning.

Kiddie pools appeared to be the leading site of germs among public pools, with the highest percentage of disinfectant violations. The highest percentage of immediate closures were at child care facility pools.

Urine, suntan lotion and sweat all contain nitrogen that eat up chlorine in pools, a possible cause of low disinfectant levels in wading pools. The CDC recommends consumers buy test strips to check the water at public pools before swimming.
